The Sex Pistols Here we watched the famous documentary about the band the Sex Pistols. We watched this to look at the negative ways of conducting a documentary. The first negative factor of this documentary was that that the main focus was on the interviewer, not the band, which was the subject of the film. This was done by the first shot of film being of Bill Grundy. Another negative aspect of the interview is that the band and Bill were both drunk whilst the interview took place. This made the band unaware of all of the questions being asked and they were unable to answer them clearly. It also meant that Grundy couldnt ask serious questions about the band's career. This interview therefore, is not a good template to use for my documentary as it has an unclear structure of narrative and there was no obvious meaning of the documentary. Princess Diana This documentary focuses on Princess Diana struggling through her separation with Prince Charles. Compared to the "Sex Pistols" documentary, this puts Diana in a positive light. This is shown when repetitive close up shots of her face are introduced to show her being sad and feeling sorry for herself. Another difference between these documentaries is that the interview focused on Diana and not the interviewer. This is shown when the camera would always cut back to Diana once a question had been asked. The room where the interview took place, was set with family photos of Diana. This allowed the audience to feel sorry for Diana. This documentary was objective because it showed Diana as being the victim of the separation and allowed the audience to think the worst about the royal family. Therefore the documentary did not give a fair reality of the situation she was in.
