We wanted to use music which was subtle yet emotionally effective. We liked that both songs we selected featured a piano throughout the soundtrack. This instrumental piece mans that it will not detract from the footage in the documentary. The first track we decided is "Petrichor" by Keaton Henson. We used this as the only music throughout the first draft of our documentary but when watching the completed edited footage we thought that the film came across like a promotional video for Holly Hedge and The Pet Studio. Due to this, we decided to include an additional piece of music, "To Build a Home" by the Cinematic Orchestra. We tried to use the instrumental version of this song, but as it is very well known, it was though the audience would spend the time waiting for the lyrics to begin rather than focusing on the documentary. The third piece of music we looked at and decided to use in our film is "Emissary", again by Keaton Henson. This song also featured piano and implied the same calming but sad emotion that we liked about "Petrichor". As "Emissary" is slower and depicts a more negative emotion than "Petrichor" we have decided to use it when the contents of the documentary are saddening, as well as using "Petrichor" when the contents is more uplifting.

We made the decision to use archive footage in our documentary, specifically, footage from a 1980 TV series called "Training Dogs the Woodhouse Way". Barbara Woodhouse was a dog trainer, author and TV personality from Dublin. Her show consisted of training badly behaved dogs and also how to train puppies. We found an episode of when Barbara trains puppies and it includes footage of what to keep a dog in (e.g. kennel/cages). We wanted to use archive footage to show how the dog caring industry has changed through the years and to break up the present footage by using footage filmed with older equipment. We decided to use this footage as it shows how dog care has evolved through the years and if there are any changes in how dogs are treated. We also looked at Paul O’Grady’s “For the Love of Dogs” as potential archive footage for our documentary. We looked at this footage as the show features the Battersea cats and dogs home which is a rescue kennel. We thought of using this show as it would have showed a different rescue kennel and how it varied from Holly Hedge and Pet Studio. We did however think that there was not a clear distinction between our footage and the ITV programme compared to the 1980’s archive footage of Barbara Woodhouse.
On 04/03/17 we returned to Holly Hedge Animal Sanctuary to do some re-shoots. This allowed us to gain more footage of the dogs. We also managed to take some photos which we will use in our double page spread.
On the 20th of February we went to The Pet Studio to film for our documentary. We interviewed Liza Smith who is the owner of the Kennel/Pet groomers and asked her about the kennel business. At Pet Studio we also filmed the dogs in the kennel in order to relate this footage to what was said in the interview. We have successfully filmed all the required footage from here, and therefore do not need to return to Pet Studio.
This is our 4th and final draft of our documentary poster. We have chosen this poster as the image is clear and it offers neutral colours. This also implies that the documentary is upsetting as the colours are not bright. We have again used the dominant colours of the image to create the ITV logo and the arch. This compliments the image and allows all of the pieces of information to connect with the image of the dog.
This is our 3rd draft of an ITV poster. This time we have used an image of an employee at The Pet Studio as we wanted to use a person rather than a dog for the poster. We have again used dominant colours as the colours on the ITV logo. We have decided not to use this poster as the image we used is slightly out of focus which has decreased the quality of the poster. I also think that the arch to the right hand side of the poster is too high up and takes up too much of the poster.
This is our 2nd draft of an ITV poster. We have changed the image to one of a dog but it also has a lot more empty space in the background. We did this to show the environment that the dog is in and to allow the audience to see more of the dog's face and body. We again matched the colour of the arch to the dominant colour of the image and matched this to the "i" in "itv". We also contrasted the rest of the ITV logo with colours in the image. We will not be using this poster however, as the picture we used is slightly out of focus and is focused more on the cage than the dog himself.
These are some locations shots from The Pet Studio. As like Holly Hedge, we used a Nikon D3300 camera and 2 lenses; an 18-55mm lens and a 55-300mm lens.
These are the location shots from Holly Hedge Animal Sanctuary. To film the footage at Holly Hedge, we used a Nikon D3300 camera with a 18-55mm lens and for some extreme close up shots of the dogs and we also used a 55-300mm lens for establishing shots of the location itself.
This is a 2nd draft of a Channel 4 poster. For this draft we have used a colour within the image as the colour for the C4 logo and the block of colour for the text. We have done this as it is more alike standard C4 posters, which uses a common colour in the poster's background image for the foreground text. For this 2nd draft, we have also changed the font of the title and date/time to match the C4 font. Another small detail which has strongly enhanced our poster, is that we moved the text box away from the edge of the image and we have also added a website for the documentary.
